President's Letter

DEAR MEMBERS AND PROSPECTIVE MEMBERS:                                                        May 2011

ADVOCATES FOR CLASSICAL MUSIC is halfway through its 15th successful year of fulfilling its mission of developing future audiences for classical music in San Diego.  Our dedicated docents donate an enormous amount of time, and have reached 75,000 students since the school year ending June 2003.  We continue to receive hundreds of letters of appreciation from principals, teachers, and students, and Classics for Kids and the San Diego Symphony have praised our effectiveness.

This concert season your support enabled AFCM to:

q  Increase its docent pool by 50%. New volunteers include music teachers, musicians, and music scholars!

q  Provide docents with nearly 1,000 books and CDs to enrich school presentations.

q  Sponsor the San Diego Unified School District's Instrumental Honors Concerts.

q  Subsidize tickets and buses for Title I schools to allow students from low-income areas to attend Classics for Kids and San Diego Symphony Concerts.

q  Award scholarships of up to $1,000 each to San Diego Youth Symphony and San Diego Symphony concerto-competition winners.

We expect similar accomplishments this year and are completing plans for an exciting new program we call “Flex Music” which will increase the number of docent visits to area schools. Read June’s Musically Speaking to learn more.

None of this would happen without your support! I hope you decide to renew your membership for the 2011-2012 season so that we can continue to bring great music to the children of San Diego.

Sincerely,

Ron Bierman

President
